OUR CAMPAIGN: “USING ART TO CONNECT REFUGEE & LOCAL COMMUNITIES”
Through high quality arts activity, our project will create opportunities for people living in isolated Home Office asylum accommodation settings to come together with local communities, fostering mutual learning & respect, changes in attitudes, meaning-making, connection & hope!
SITUATION:
People seeking asylum in the UK are often staying in temporary Home Office accommodation close to established communities but with little connection. This can lead to tensions, misinformation, suspicion and mutual lack of understanding. It can also lead to stigma, increased isolation, segregation and deterioration in the mental health & resilience of people in the asylum system. Positive opportunities for local people and people seeking asylum to meet together are limited & much needed.
SOLUTION:
Building on learning to date, we will offer arts-based mental health & wellbeing workshops inside asylum accommodation sites, bridging into local communities through high quality arts-oriented activity in small groups, e.g. community printmaking workshops for co-produced zines; photographic nature walks & local exhibitions; cultural cooking exchanges & celebrations. This work will help reduce stigma and increase understanding, with better mental health and wellbeing outcomes for everyone.
