COLLABORATIVE BUILDING

Writer: Art RefugeArt Refuge

Essex, 06.06.24

In much of our work with men housed in Home Office accommodation settings, monotony, anxiety and limbo are prevalent themes, alongside a powerlessness to control the situation. This is evident with men housed in Wethersfield Asylum Centre in Essex, whose frustrations led yesterday to some of the men staging a peaceful protest at the gates of the camp about the challenging conditions inside.

Today at a church drop-in for men housed in the camp, several men found a place they could inhabit for a while, and find some agency in the making process. Collaborative building was formed and deconstructed at The Community Table which was captured in this stop frame animation. As the building got taller one of the men taking part said it was like the game of Jenga - but instead of collapsing, it was deliberately dismantled.
