“WE ARE HERE”: PHOTOGRAPHY GROUP FOR YOUNG PEOPLE - AUTUMN/WINTER 2021 - WESTON SUPER MARE, NORTH SOMERSET
Art Refuge was invited by North Somerset Council and Curo Group to offer an open-access photography group for young people in North Somerset who have experiences of seeking asylum in the UK. The weekly collaboration with Curo Group includes a range of photographic processes alongside the use of other art materials and media, and focuses on physical, geographical and psychological orientation, including walks using photography, found objects and mapping. As the core component for the group, photography offers opportunities for expressive freedom, playfulness and a sense of agency over the telling of individual and collective stories.
Sharing some beautiful images from today’s session:
‘Today’s group was all about projection, light and shadow. The young people played with the slide projector and explored unknown locations, creating expansive images that centred around a theme of birds and flight. There was a great sense of collaboration and communication as the slides were chosen, choreographed, and photographed and then printed straight away to be admired.’
